6-Minute Walk Test

How to perform the 6-min walk test from home:

1. Download the MapMyWalk application by Under Armour for iPhone or Android.

    Find an area near your house with flat and smooth terrain (a flat sidewalk, road, or

    community track work the best).

2. Open the application and press “Start Workout” - Please begin walking after

    pressing “Start Workout”

3. The goal of the test is to walk as far as possible for 6 minutes.

4. Please walk as quickly as you can without running. 

5. You are permitted to slow down, to stop, and to rest as necessary, but please start

    walking again as soon as you are able.

6. Please do not talk during the test unless you have a problem or are feeling unwell. 

7. Immediately stop the test if you feel:

  • Chest pain

  • Lightheadedness

  • Severe shortness of breath 

  • Confusion 

  • Leg cramps

  • Blue or grey skin colour

  • Nausea 

  • Excessive fatigue â€‹

  8. Please walk with your phone in your hand so you can see when you reach the

      6-minute mark.

  9. When 6 minutes has passed, stop where you are and press “Pause” and then

      press “Hold to Finish”

10. Please keep track of the distance covered.

6-Minute Walk Instruction Video

Once you have completed the 6-minute walk test, please go onto the physical assessment page on fitkidney.ca and enter your name, the date and the distance covered during the 6-minute walk test. This value can be found on the MapMyWalk application after pressing “Hold to Finish”

Sit to Stand

30-Second Sit to Stand

Equipment Needed:

  • Stable Chair

  • Timer

How to perform the 30-Second Sit to Stand from home:

  1. Please find a stable chair (preferably with no arm rests).

  2. Move chair to clear area.

  3. Sit in the middle of the chair. 

  4. Place your hands on the opposite shoulder crossed, at the wrists. 

  5. Keep your feet flat on the floor. 

  6. Keep your back straight, and keep your arms against your chest. 

  7. On “Go,” begin timing and rise to a full standing position, then sit back down again. 

  8. Repeat this for 30 seconds (for best results ask a friend or family member to help with timing) 

  9. If you must use your arms to stand, stop the test. Record “0” for the number and score. 

  10. Count the number of times you come to a full standing position in 30 seconds. (for best results ask a friend or family member to help with counting)

  11. If you are over halfway to a standing position when 30 seconds have elapsed, count it as a stand.

Once you have completed the 30-sec sit to stand, please go onto the physical assessment page on fitkidney.ca and enter your name, the date and the number of completed “sit to stands” performed in 30 seconds.

Frailty Assessment

Frailty Assessment

How to perform the frailty assessment from home:

 

Equipment Needed:

  • Stable Chair

  • Measuring Tape or iPhone/Android with measuring tool

  • Marker

  • Timer

 

In order to complete this part of the physical assessment we need you to go onto fitkidney.ca and click the Physical Assessment Form

 

  1.  You will be prompted to answer three questions.

  2. Please enter your name, the date and answer the three questions to the best of your ability and press submit.

  3. You will then be prompted to complete the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and the Grip Strength test.

Timed Up and Go (TUG)

How to perform the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test from home:

  1. Please find a stable chair.

  2. Move chair to clear area.

  3. Please measure out 3 metres from the chair using a tape measure (or any measuring device)

  4. Please mark this spot with something you will be able to see and walk around (for best results use a piece of tape or paper)

  5.  Once 3 meters have been measured please sit in the middle of the chair.

  6. Please have a watch, phone or timer available to press start and stop (for best results ask a friend or family member to help with timing).

  7. As a prompt you can say “ready, set, go” - on “go” start the timer. 

  8. Rise to a full standing position (you may use the arms of the chair to stand up or sit down).

  9. Once you are up, you may take any path you like, but I want you to move as QUICKLY as you feel safe and comfortable until you pass the marked distance of 3 meters with both feet.

  10. Turn around and walk back to the chair. Please stop the timer once your back touches the back of the chair. 

  11. You may complete one practice round.

  12. You may do this up to three separate times.

Once you have completed the Timed Up and Go (TUG) Test, please go onto the physical assessment page and click the “TUG” test option on fitkidney.ca and enter your name, the date and the time (seconds) it took you to complete the Timed Up and GO (TUG) test.
